"Trends" in 2021: And Why We Hate That Word

Kylie here this week! As many of you who know us, we’re not the “trendy” type. Looking at our full portfolio, we are classic girls at heart. So we tend to hate promoting what others may call “trends.” Instead, we’re going to promote the designs that we feel have been popular all along but perhaps may have hidden for a while. Those are the movements that we believe have come full circle!

Let’s start with saying good-bye to minimalism. We were never minimalists ourselves; we like objets de’art  (see, we’re cultured) like plushy towels, old books, yummy candles, and things that add personality to your space. Otherwise, to us, it’s just a bit cold. We want to see YOU and your family. That’s what creates a home. This “trend” is coming back in full force (but let’s be honest, was it really ever gone?). Whether you like the full-blown “granny chic” or “grandmillenial” or just a touch of accessories, we’re in your camp! Always have been, and always will be!

Continuing that idea of maximalism, we also love upcycling beautiful antique pieces. Of course, there’s always the place for a shiny new counter stool, but if we can mix it with an antique sideboard that’s updated with a bit of paint, WOW! The benefits of doing this are two-fold: not only are you perhaps using a family piece and reprising some family history, but you’re also keeping things out of dumpsters! We hate to see good pieces simply thrown away. And if it’s a piece that’s “new to you” from an antique shop? Well, you’re also supporting local businesses rather than buying mass-produced. Once again, we don’t think this “trend” ever really left, and upcycling has always been our thing!

Personally, I can’t believe it when I hear that “comfy” is a trend of 2021. WHEN DID WE NOT LIKE COMFORT?! Jeepers! All of you, with growing families, don’t you want to be comfortable?! Can I get a HALLELUJAH!? All joking aside, the Bees believe in comfort above all else. If a sofa is beautiful, that’s great. But unless you can curl up with a good book or gather with your kids to have a family movie night, is it worth it? Of course, we would agree that there is definitely more of an emphasis on comfy just because we’ve all been stuck inside for the past year. But we never believe that that movement was ever gone. See the picture below. Can you just IMAGINE sinking into that sofa?!

Speaking of being trapped inside for a year, people are taking a look at more in-home workspaces. We’ve all adapted to Zoom calls, so why not create a tranquil and efficient space to be in? We’re seeing more and more requests for home offices. Even when this pandemic is over, we definitely think that the world has adapted so that many can still work more from home. So why not create that inspirational space now?!

Another thing that the Bees have been doing for years: making sure spaces are DURABLE. For goodness sake, we’re at home more often than ever. Between dogs, young children, husbands (😜), we need spaces that can handle the trials of everyday use and abuse. Why would you cover a sofa in a fabric that can barely last a year?! Sure, it’s pretty, but we also need it to be functional. We’ve always promoted both beautiful AND durable fabrics and rugs. Otherwise, you’re just throwing away money on something that may need to be replaced sooner than later. We want things to stand the test of time!

Ok, if Crouton can sit on it with dirty paws and my kids can jump up with sticky fingers, I think we’re good.

What “trends” do YOU love?!
