5 Interior Design Trends We’re Loving

Being an interior designer, it's important to keep up to date with all the new trends. While you won't find the Bees jumping on every new bandwagon, we definitely feel that these trends are here to stay, even for a true classicist like us! Here are some suggestions for incorporating trends that make sense…

1. Be Nice to Mother Earth!

Let’s start with eco-friendly products. It is more important than ever to be environmentally conscious with everything you do, especially things you are putting into your home! One of the best ways we, as interior designers, can accomplish this is to REFRESH AND REUSE!!! Who doesn’t love shopping at vintage markets for that perfect antique hand-knotted wool rug or a gorgeous 1950’s mid-century modern sofa? Well, we’re all about finding that piece that we can refinish as a perfect addition to your home. We have been shopping vintage, consignment and antique stores for years. There are so many treasures to be found, up-cycling helps the budget and the environment. It doesn't stop at furniture, repainting old vases and decor, give old things a new spin and fresh update. We love reupholstering old pieces or repainting drab furniture (check out the awesome chairs below - what a punch of color, right?!). So let’s jump on the bandwagon together and give Mother Earth a little break!

2. Bring the Outdoors In

Keeping with our Mother Nature theme, why don’t you bring the outdoors in? I know, I know…this is coming from someone who can’t even keep a stick of bamboo alive. BUT, hear me out. First of all, it could just be a matter of bringing in big, bold natural patterns on fabrics, upholstery and artwork. If you have a green thumb, go for it, a bit of green here and there, adds a wonderful pop of color and can also help to purify your indoor air!

3. Minimalism

The old adage, “less is more” can be applied to even little accessories. Even if you don’t think you’re a true “minimalist”, that doesn’t mean you can’t get something out of this concept. Using concrete accents, mixed metals, metallics, painted brick, and matte finishes keeps a design minimal but not boring.

4. Maximalism

On the flip side, the Bees love a beautiful pattern! We have seen an increase in wallpaper and wall coverings, especially fun patterns and colors. The wallpaper is not limited to walls either, bold ceilings are also trending. Chinoiserie patterns are incredibly popular, but also timeless. Ancient patterns based on Asian influence is at the heart of Chinoiserie, and mixing it with refreshing colors can pull a whole room together. Tip: Choosing a colorful pattern, can be a great starting point for a room and the color palette.

5. Banquettes in the Kitchen

Banquettes are a trend that we have always been on board with! Whether you have a circular or rectangular table, banquettes add cozy and functional seating. Small kitchen layout with little room for seating? Banquettes are a great solution! We have an awesome banquette that we just completed that we can’t wait to share. In the meantime, check out this terrific banquette design by Kress Jack.
