Interior design trends coming and going in 2020 (via Elle Decor)

Well, as we’re getting ready to usher in the new year in just a few short days, we thought we’d get a head start on the new year with trends coming and going!

The Bees don’t like to follow trends……not that we don’t appreciate an amazing trend, but that we’re classic gals at heart. But we did find this article from Elle Decor interesting because there were some great insights in it! Not only are they revealing the trends that are coming IN style, but they’re also letting you know what’s headed OUT!

IN: GRANDMILLENIAL STYLE

Or as the Bee’s call it: “Granny Chic”!. Kylie LOVES this style, in fact, her whole home is going a little granny chic. Did you get a chance to read that blog post from a while back? If not, it’s definitely worth a read (if for nothing else but her humorous take on the subject and some great inspiration photos!).

Anyway, we LOVE this style because it’s a nod to the classic and timeless design and it’s bringing what our grannies did back to the forefront of design! While House Beautiful stated that it’s having “a moment”, we think it’s gonna be here for a while! So save those old teacups and doilies from your grandma and get ready to show them off!

OUT: GRAY ON GRAY

We agree with this as well - gray has had it’s moment in the spotlight. It’s time for some pops of color and bold choices. No more gray cabinets - try a classic, timeless white that will be the perfect backdrop to any decor!

IN: LAYERING OLD AND NEW

The Bees love to layer old and new - take one of our most current projects. The furniture you see was mostly new, but we added a beautiful antique side table and painted it a bright bold green to create a layered look.

OUT: MONOCHRAMATIC PALETTES

As you can tell from the picture above, the Bees love to add a pop of color here and there. Monochromatic color schemes can become boring if too neutral. We’re definitely seeing a trend to adding a bold statement and the Bees LOVE to embrace that!

IN: CLASSICISM

Again, just like the “granny chic” style coming back, the trend to classical design is coming back. Time-honored elements such as Grecian details (think: Greek Key trims!) and busts (playfulness!) will never go out of style! And talk about bringing back a classic quatrefoil shape in the lamps below! (By Visual Comfort)

OUT: KARATE CHOPPED PILLOWS

Ok, for Mary, this was always out. We never liked the Karate-chop look, but some designers swore by it! No wrong answer, but the trend is going towards less “chopping!”

IN: MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACES

One of the first things the Bees ask when starting a new project is HOW you want the space to function? Does it need to work for a busy family? Do you have pets or children that we need to consider in the design? Functional spaces are key….bonus that by creating multi-functional rooms you also enhance your resale value!
